SkimBold sizes the band to your line height, so it follows the text when you change the font size or spacing.
What is bold-first reading?
Bold-first reading, sometimes called fixation-point formatting, makes the first part of every word bold. The idea is that your eyes jump from one bold anchor to the next, and because we recognise most words from their first few letters, the brain completes each word without needing to look at every letter. SkimBold applies this formatting to any text you paste, so you can see whether it works for you.
Does it work?
The honest answer is that it depends on the reader. Studies so far have not shown a consistent increase in reading speed or comprehension across groups of people. Many individual readers, though, say it helps them keep their place, skim long documents or stay with a dense text. Because it costs nothing to try, the best test is your own: read a passage with and without bold, using the Bold off switch, and notice which feels easier.
Settings that make a difference
Strength controls how much of each word is bold. Short words always get one bold letter. Around half of each longer word is a good starting point. Every second or third word gives a lighter rhythm that some people prefer for long reading. Skip short words leaves words like “a”, “of” and “the” plain.
Spacing often matters as much as bold. Larger text, more space between lines, and slightly wider letter and word spacing make text easier for many readers, including some with dyslexia. A soft background tint can reduce glare from bright white screens. Try the cream and blue tints, and the serif and rounded font options.
The reading ruler and focus mode
The reading ruler highlights a single line, following your pointer or finger, or moving one line at a time with the arrow keys after you click the text. Focus mode fills the screen with just your text. Press Escape to leave it.
Using the result elsewhere
Copy formatted pastes real bold text into documents and email. Copy Markdown is handy for note apps. Download HTML saves a simple page with your spacing and font settings that opens in any browser, even offline. SkimBold uses ordinary bold formatting rather than special Unicode characters, so screen readers, search and spell checkers still work. Your text is never uploaded.
